I'm very picky about my rice. So, I always wash my rice before cooking it and I always cook my rice in a rice cooker. The result is perfect rice every time. However, until now I've never found the right container to wash my rice in. Colanders are not suiatable because the holes in most colanders are too large so that the rice will escape with the water. With a common bowl the problem is, how do you drain off the wash water without also allowing rice to escape? I've used strainers and other approaches but, none work as well and a easily as this rice washing bowl.When I cook rice I usually cook 1-4 cups of rice at a time. This bowl handles that well but, can proabaly accomidate two to three times that much rice.In fact, when the bowl first arrived I thought it was too large. My mind changed immediately when I started using it. I like to use my hands when I wash rice and I have large hands; it turns out that the bowl is the perfect size so that I can get water, rice and my hands all into the mix and get the job done.While you can't really see it in the picture, the bowl has draining holes at the bottom. It also has draining holes incorporated in the little drain spout. This gives this bowl a lot of flexibility.I generally don't like single purpose tools in my kitchen, they just take up too much room and expense. Since I got the bowl I've been using it to wash, and strain all sort of things in addition to rice. It was a nice find for me and the price is also quite reasonable.

Like the title says: It's perfect for washing rice. Though, if washing smaller grains or seeds (such as Quinoa), expect a minimal amount to escape through the side drain (if you use it). Not removing a star for that as the product is advertised as a rice washer and it performs that duty perfectly.The side drain is relatively high from the bottom of the bowl so as long as you don't tip the bowl in the direction of that drain, then no quinoa will escape and the water will continue to slowly seep out of the bottom drain. Otherwise, if you want a quick wash, just fashion your hand (or a paper towel, etc.) in front of the side drain to allow water seepage and seize any escaping quinoa.

I've been using an old fashioned mesh strainer to rinse my rice. The problem with this is when washing under a faucet, the water goes straight through - meaning you have to really keep adjusting the bowl so that all the rice is rinsed.With this particular bowl, it shaves off much of that wasted time and gets the rice even cleaner. When you place the rice in the bowl and begin to rinse, the water generally will reach a consistent level above the rice - where gravity takes over and drips out the excess perfectly no matter how much water you are running through it.I generally just shuffle the rice around with my fingers while its submerged. The friction of the submerged rice together with the constant flow of water gets the rice especially clean. The water drains right out leaving perfectly clean rice. I love this bowl!
