5Looking for an outstanding Zojirushi thermos with stainless steel *interior*, too? Your search is over!
By Kathleen Francis
I've been a Zojirushi fan for a while now (my water heater and rice cooker both still going strong after 10 years!). After cleaning up yet another spill from a leaky thermal mug, I decided to splurge on a Zoji sports mug. It's hard for me to think of this as a mug, because while you can insert a straw into the narrow opening, it's a little awkward to drink from directly.I've noticed several people posting reviews about similar Zojirushi items, unhappy with the nonstick interiors. This product group has a plain stainless steel interior, no coatings. I prefer this not only from wanting to personally avoid consuming any flakes that might be shed from the lining, but also because I have a pet bird. Birds are extremely (even lethally) sensitive to heated nonstick materials, so I didn't want to risk the (probably remote) chance of her being exposed to noxious compounds. Here's the company's compare-the-products page, which was really handy to find this sort of detail:<...>So, how does it work?, you ask. Really, really well. The lab I work in is not air conditioned, so it can get very warm in the summer. I wanted something to keep my ice coffee cold, and I could pour small amounts into a cup as the day passed. I decided to follow the suggestion to pre-cool (or -heat) the mug before filling. In the early evening, I filled it about halfway with ice cubes, left it on the counter (RT=around 80 degrees F), then filled it with ice coffee a few hours later. I took a peek before filling it- the ice cubes had only melted enough to stick to each other- no free liquid! I filled it with ice coffee/milk,left it on the counter overnight, then took it to work in the morning. Later that morning (14 hours after loading the ice cubes), I shook it- most of the ice was still present!I drank *cold* ice coffee all afternoon, and when I went to prepare the next day's ice coffee, many small pieces of ice were still there- a day later! The mug itself is surprisingly compact- you wouldn't guess it holds a full liter to look at it. It does; I filled it, then poured the water into a large 1-liter flask- right up to the 1-L mark!By the way, the box it comes in does *not* say it holds a liter- something like 0.95 L- very weird to have packaging underestimate the capacity of the mug. Oh well. Now one of the most important elements of a travel-beverage container is the lid. Otherwise great containers can fail if the "interface" does! I like this design so far- push a nifty red button on top to open, push the plastic tab to the side to close. As far as I can tell, it's mechanical, no spring to break or corrode. It seals well; if you don't overfill it to begin with (pushing liquid up into the screw-threads of the lid), it doesn't leak. I've given it a good shaking, and nothing leaks out. There is a soft rubber gasket which is easy to clean around- important for me, since I like my caffeine with milk or cream! I am not sure if any parts are dishwasher-safe; I plan on hand-washing it rather than risk warping the plastic parts. It comes with a little cup as a cap on top; handy if you are on the road and want a quick drink. Be careful though, to not pick it up by the top unless you have properly replaced the cap- I found out the hard way! When filled, it will separate from the cap and tumble to the ground if it isn't screwed on right- which is easy enough to do. You line up a ridge on the cap to the top of the handle, and this can be done without properly screwing it on. That's about the only thing resembling a problem I've had with this item. The handle folds to the side of the mug when not in use, streamlining the mug if you are putting it in a carry bag. It comes with a strap you can snap on and off as needed; I haven't used it yet.Hope this wordy review helps you make your choice- I know I read dozens before settling on this one, and I love it so far!

5beyond my expectations

i ordered my flask back in january, and it arrived rather quickly (expected, being a prime member). i wanted to wait a while to compose a review, especially in consideration of a previous reviewer who seems to have had some awful luck with their zojirushi. if any flaws were going to present themselves, i figured a few uses might expose them.however, i have had nothing but amazing luck with mine. the day i received it, i gave it a good wash, a better rinse, and then filled it with boiling water. i went roller skating that night, and figured i'd take it with me to live in the car while i skated. being quite the cold winter this year in seattle, i figured it couldn't hurt as an effort to test the flask's usefulness.thirty (30) hours later, i emptied the flask, and gave my fingers a slight burn in the process... the water was still hot, Hot, HOT!so i now know that it holds temperature, but how would some drinkable contents hold up?i like tea, earl grey, hot... and i like additives to my tea (lemon and local honey). after almost three months of using my zojirushi flask at least once a week every week, i have yet to encounter any issues with it. my tea is hot, it tastes fresh as it would out of my favourite ceramic mug, and i have had no health repercussions. i feel bad for the previous reviewer, but it's safe to say that my flask is going to work out just fine :)
