At first we were puzzled as the lid has a cover which can be snapped off. When that cover is opened, the lid can be taken apart. Why that is so, is nowhere explained in the manual which is entirely in Japanese. It only warns us to not to open the cover except for cleaning - if I understood the manual correctly. Apparently I am not the only one who is puzzled what the function of that cover is, but I assume it may have something to do with the design of the lid...Apart from that mystery, I was afraid that I would burn my lips when sipping the hot coffee. Apparently that is not the case. What I really like is the very nice design, that the coffee stays hot without scalding your lips when you drink, and that it seems to be totally safe - I even put it in the same bag where I keep my computer.Update 1 April 2012: After having used the Zojirushi mug for four month, I am still very satisfied. Zojirushi stands for quality and this product is no exception.

I filled this thermos with hot coffee at 8am. It sat untouched on my desk until 1pm, at which point I put it in the office refrigerator. At 4pm, I took it out, poured a cup of coffee, and after sitting on my desk for five hours and in a refrigerator for three, the coffee was STILL hot! Amazing. This thermos is also really classy-looking, if you're into that sort of thing - but do realize that it's a thermos, not a mug. You can't easily drink out of it, which I found disappointing.

I bought one of these, and was so impressed that I bought a second on. It is important to realize what you are getting here. This is a true vacuum-insulated "thermos" bottle, and despite its tiny size it holds a full 17 ounces of fluid. It will keep liquids hot or cold all day long, and that is no exaggeration. It is absolutely watertight, which is so often a flaw with other insulated mugs. You can put it in your backpack, briefcase, or purse with no worries about leakage. The lining is incredibly thin but all I can say is that when you pour hot liquids inside, the outside remains cool. I quickly realized that I needed to add a few ice cubes when filling it with boiling hot tea, because otherwise three hours later it would still be much too hot to drink. The lid comes apart so that you can easily clean the component parts. The rim is comfortable to drink from, and easy to pour from if you would prefer to fill a mug or cup. I cannot come up with a single downside to this product. I am very happy I decided to buy the first one, and now I have one at home and at work. Kudos to Zojirushi for a wonderful product.
